Security forces patrolled the streets of Jos in central Nigeria on Tuesday as relatives of the hundreds of people killed at the weekend continue to bury their dead. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has put security forces on full alert and sacked his chief security advisor, Sarki Mukhtar.
Survivors have accused the authorities of intervening too late to halt the violence in Jos, where several hundred people were killed in earlier clashes in January.
Efforts to stop the fighting are mainly led by locals, says correspondent Ben Shemang in Jos.
While religious leaders have been running inter-faith debates and workshops to promote harmony between Muslims and Chrsitians, severe social problems remain a source of unrest, he tells RFI.
"A lot of the youths are getting disenchanted, probably because on the side of the government there are many things missing, in terms of social amenities, no job creation, no schools, no roads - so a whole lot of problems that are compounding these issues."
Certain public figures take advantage of this disaffection to incite conflict between different ethnic and religious groups, Shemang says, "by way of horrible preaching on both sides of the religion".
Yet Jos is mainly peaceful today, he reports. "People are yearning for peace."

This picture is just so jarring. It captivates my attention and heart. My heart goes out to all those who have lost someone. I hope that those being buried are spiritually rising to see the Father. I am pleading and sending out my prayers. I will continue to pray for Nigeria. Hope is always there in the midst of devastation. Dont let hope die but rise and grow stronger.
Love your neighbor as yourself. Stop the bloodshed today.
Let us do unto others as we would have them do unto us. It is beyond the time to end violence, so it must be everyone's daily cross to carry to forgive and only love. Love keeps no record of wrongs. Love always hopes. Love never fails. God is love. Hatred is from the evil one. Cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive and making it obedient to Christ. God will repay.
